Reporting & Self-isolation Procedures
Information accurate as per July 2021
Phase 1 & 2a
If a student:
- Has tested positive for COVID-19
- Has COVID-19 symptoms
- Self-isolating (due to close/household contact but asymptomatic) or in quarantine after travel
Please self-certify your absence on Minerva via your eportfolio (please note specific detail is required in section 5)
DO NOT go to campus & complete the form notifying the University of suspected or confirmed case of COVID-19
Completion of this form will lead to central University support processes being followed. See here for full details of the University’s COVID-19 response.
Self-isolate in accordance with the NHS guidance and follow the NHS advice about seeking a test.
After 10 days from the onset of symptoms/start of self-isolation (unless symptoms develop or remains) a student will no longer need to isolate (unless otherwise advised). If you receive a negative COVID-19 test result in your self-isolation period, DO NOT return to campus without checking with your Phase team that it is safe to do so. You may be required to self-isolate further.
If you receive a positive COVID-19 test having been in the symptomatic or self-isolation category please contact medical_students_affairs@sheffield.ac.uk for advice.
Phase 2b, 3a, 3b, 4
If a student:
- Has tested positive for COVID-19
- Has COVID-19 symptoms
- Self-isolating (due to close/household contact but asymptomatic) or in quarantine after travel
Please inform your placement provider via email for their Test and Trace procedures and self-certify your absence on Minerva via your eportfolio (please note specific detail required in section 5)
DO NOT go to your placement or campus & complete the form notifying the University of suspected or confirmed case of COVID-19

How it works
NB: student volunteers need to login to their Uni of Sheffield Google account to access the volunteer sign-up form.
In light of the current pandemic, Sheffield MedSoc is organising medical students to volunteer in both clinical and community roles, in support of patients and clinicians.
Services that we can provide include:
- babysitting/childcare
- Cooking / delivery of cooked meals
- Caring for the elderly
… And much more! We are also working with hospitals to integrate well-trained medical student volunteers into clinical practice.

We know it’s difficult.
So we’re working together with PsychSoc to release a weekly newsletter offering welfare tips, testimonies and much more.
How is COVID-19 affecting your studies?
Our colleagues in London are collaborating on a global initiative to elicit medical students’ views on the current COVID-19 crisis. They have developed a short 5 min survey to let medics’ voices be heard.
This survey was developed by students, for students, and aims to:
- Explore what we as medical students believe we can do to help and what we feel comfortable doing.
- Gather students’ concerns about clinical work during a pandemic,
- Explore how medical education in these difficult times should be delivered.
The team would really appreciate your help in filling in this survey! Your time will go towards forming a global, diverse and accurate depiction of medical students’ genuine thoughts about the ongoing pandemic.
