How to decide?
Deciding to study medicine can be a difficult decision. Hopefully some of the information on these pages can give you more information… and you can see how great studying medicine at Sheffield is!
How to decide?
Here are a few hints to help you make the right decision for you;
- Speak to people who are already in the business; doctors or nurses you know who can give you a realistic perspective of medicine as a career.
- Talk to anybody you know already studying medicine. Alternatively have a read of the interviews on this page for our perspective!
- Is there a mentoring programme available at your school?
- WORK EXPERIENCE! Probably the most beneficial method of deciding if medicine is for you is to experience it first hand as much as you can.
- Speak to your careers advisor or teachers at school for any contacts they may have at a nearby hospital or carehome.
- Hospitals are more frequently developing specific work experience programmes for you so it’s always worth sending them a letter to enquire.
- Part time jobs in care homes or disability centres are fantastic experience and look great on the UCAS form!
- Medicine taster courses such as medlink or medsim are a brilliant way of experiencing life as a medical student. Open to year 12 & 13, these residential courses occur over a few days where students get to stay at a university, live like a student and attend lectures and talks about medicine.They also give plenty of handy hints and tips for applications and even practice interviews if you want!
