The Interview

Preparation

  • Why do you want to be a doctor? Make sure you have an answer to this question ready and avoid the very common; “because I want to help people”
  • UCAS form - make sure you know your personal statement well as you are very likely to be asked about it in interview.
  • Make sure you know about the course you’re applying to do, ie why do you like Sheffield’s course design? What are you looking forward to doing?
  • Research a few things about Sheffield, why do you want to live here?
  • Try and practice to avoid nerves. Ask a teacher or parent to give you a practice interview to get a feel for the environment.
  • Choose an outfit you feel comfortable in otherwise you won’t feel like yourself but not too comfortable – you need to look like you can be a doctor!
  • Think about the future – have you thought about a speciality? What do you know about a career path in medicine?
  • How do you think you can cope balancing a social life with the workload of a medical student? Do you have examples of time management skills?
  • What about ethical issues? Medicine today is frequently about dividing resources e.g. one heart transplant or 50 gall bladder removals? Would your personal beliefs everinterfere with your professional judgement?
  • Try and keep up to date with health issues in the media, you may get asked your opinion on them or ifyou have read anything interesting lately.
  • Most people are asked if they have any questions so if you have a good one, use it!

On the day

  • Everyone will be nervous so try and breathe and relax.
  • SMILE!! Be enthusiastic.
  • Use open body language; lean forward, act interested and use good eye contact.
  • Shake the hand of the interviewers and thank them at the end.
