Entry Requirements

These are criteria which every applicant must have;

  • GCSE in English, Maths and the sciences with at least six A Grades overall.
  • GCE/VCEA Levels - AAB (resit candidates AAA) – to include Chemistry, another scienceand a third subject. General Studies is not acceptable.
  • Subjects at AS Level: Chemistry, Biology, another science and any other subject
  • Scottish Highers - AAAAB + AB in Advanced Highers
  • Irish Leaving Certificate - AAAAAB
  • BTEC National Diploma - DDM
  • International Baccalaureate - 35 points
  • Applicants with a combination of GCE and VCE A Levels should contact the Medical Admissions Office for advice.
**Students wishing to study medicine or dentistry are now also required to sit a UK clinicalaptitude test (UKCAT) exam.**

This is an exam which will test aptitude rather than academic ability using the following methods:

  • Verbal reasoning - assesses candidates' ability to think logically aboutwritten information and to arrive at a reasoned conclusion.
  • Quantitative reasoning - assesses candidates' ability to solve numerical problems.
  • Abstract reasoning - assesses candidates' ability to infer relationships from information by convergent and divergent thinking.
  • Decision analysis - assesses candidates' ability to deal with various forms of information, to infer relationships, to make informed judgements, andto decide on an appropriate response, in situations of complexity andambiguity.
  • Non-cognitive analysis - identifies the attributes and characteristics of robustness, empathy and integrity that may contribute to successful health professional practice.

Your Application

Personal statement: This is your chance to show off who you are and set you apart fromall the other applicants so don’t rush it.

  • Firstly, DON’T LIE! It will be obvious when they ask you about it in interview.
  • Why do you want to do medicine? What have you done to prove this?
  • Sound enthusiastic and include all medical experience, responsibility roles e.g. prefect or team captain. Also, evidence of team work and any extra curricular activities- volunteering, music, sports, theatre etc.
Explain any plans for a gap year – why you want to take it and what you will gain from it.
